Who are the Clan MacGregor

The MacGregor Clan claims to descend from the very first King of Scotland, Alpin. They are nothing, if not determined. They survived the removal of their name under the penalty of death for almost 200 years. They were legally hunted, tortured, and beheaded. Those that lay claim to their name became known as "Children of the Mist."
A Brief History of the Clan MacGregor.  The MacGregor Clan is one of the oldest clans in Scotland and was favored by the King. However, their troubles seem to have started when Robert the Bruce gave some of the MacGregor lands to one of his other supporters Neil Campbell. The Campbells harried the MacGregors, forcing them out of their land around LochAwe.  They had previously owned areas around GlenOrchy, Glenlochy, and Glenstrae in Argyll and Perth.  Their lands were reduced to just around Glenstrae. The Campbells grew in strength, and many of the poorer MacGregors became tenants of the Campbells, and as a consequence, bitter enemies. As the King favored the Campbells, the MacGregors often found themselves on the losing end of many disputes.  Due to the loss of land and the money that came with it, they often resorted to cattle rustling, which apparently was not uncommon.  One of the King's men caught some of the MacGregor men poaching, presumably for food. Every single one of them was hung.  The King’s man by the name of Drummond was murdered in 1590; no one is sure by whom, but it is presumed as a form of retaliation.

In the 16th century, the feud between the two clans erupted into an all-out war after Grey Colin killed the brother of Gregor Roy.  This resulted in eight years of battles and a blood feud that was encouraged by the Crown. The feud was particularly intense because the two clan groups had previously been close allies who had successfully expanded together. From their neighboring glens in Lorn into Breadalbane and had settled side by side upon these new lands. On 7 April 1570 near Balloch Castle, Gregor was tried, sentenced to death, and personally executed by Grey Colin.  Gregor's wife watched the execution and is credited with one of the greatest poems ever written in Great Britain.  You can hear the heartbreak in this song. It is an excerpt of a poem that, legend has it, Gregor's wife wrote while looking at the city's gates where the head of her husband was sitting on a spike.
